SEO Mistakes: Your Website has these SEO Sins?

SEO Mistakes to AvoidThere are lots of seo mistakes we make while working on our websites and blogs. And these seo sins ultimately result in low page rank, lower amount of traffic on your website and more importantly bad experience for search engines and website users. In todays post, Im going to mention 10 seo mistakes that we should avoid with our website and in case, any of our website is involved in any of these SEO sins, should work removing those problems from our website.

1. Title Tags

The biggest mistake lots of website owners make is that they dont use Title Tag altogether. And if they happen to use it, dont use it to its fullest potential. Our website Titles should be according to the kind of content we are offering on those pages. So we should include our main keywords in the Title Tag, bit make sure it looks sensible and should limit it to 65 characters. Also make sure that each page on your website has its own Title, no single Title should be used on multiple URLs on your website.

2. URL Structure

Then it comes about the URL structure. We should use SEO friendly URLs for website pages and dont forget to include your main keywords in your URL Structure. By looking at the URL of a page, we should be able to decide the kind of content will be offered to us when we open that page. For a page about SEO mistakes, should include the keyword SEO mistake in its URL. But dont make a spammy URL that includes too many keywords.

3. Missing Meta Keywords and Descriptions

Make sure each page on a website has its own Meta Keyword and Meta Description Values entered. Dont repeat the same value over and over on your website. Information shared in the Meta tags should be according to the kind of content you are providing on that page. Most search engine shows your Meta description as part of your listing in its search engine results. No doubt, Meta tags holds very little value on Google, but they still very important on Yahoo and Bing.com.

4. Non www vs. www

Your website should be available in one version only i.e. with www or without www. If you are allowing the existence of both versions, you are creating delicacy within your website. That could result in lower pagerank and search engine rankings. Like for my SFM blog, www version is available and non www version is redirected to www version.

5. Keywords in your content

Dont forget to include your main keywords within your website content, include them in a way so that they look natural. And keep the keyword density within your content less than 2 percent. You should include synonyms and related keywords to make your content more search engine friendly.

6. Image ALT text

Every image on your website should have proper ALT text attached. By adding ALT text with every image, you make them search engine friendly and become eligible for getting more traffic from search engines especially image search. Also having image ALT text makes good user experience. Imagine how your page will look like in the absence if ALT text and within images off.

7. Proper Anchor Text

Always get links with proper Anchor text whether you are getting it from other websites or practicing it on your own website. Anchor texts like Click here or For More Info make sense only when you want to get high rankings for them. So stop using these generic anchor texts and start using keyword based anchor texts for better search engine rankings to the linking pages. Suppose I want to get this post in top 1o for SEO Mistakes keyword, so the ideal approach will be getting links with anchor texts like SEO mistakes, seo mistake, seo sins, top seo mistakes with caps and dashes etc while doing it internally or getting links from external websites.

8. Flash Websites

If you have flash based websites, you will have problem in getting rankings for that website in search engines as search engines does not understand that kind of content. So to get traffic from search engines, you should create a HTML version of that website and submit it to search engines.

9. Using image headers and menus

No doubt, image makes our website look really professional, but search engines dont understand the content placed inside images or iframe tag. So if you are using images for your heading or navigation menus or any kind of link pointing to your website pages, replace that with text. You will be able to link your website pages with proper anchor text by using text instead of images, which will help you get better rankings for linking pages. And the same thing applied to heading tags i.e. H1, H2, and H3 etc. If are afraid that using text in heading tags will take away the professional look of your website, spend some time with your stylesheets to make your heading text look normal.

10. Wrong keyword selection

Lots of webmasters and bloggers make the mistake of targeting wrong keywords. Sometime they target keywords, which have no searches at all, so if you are able to get into top 10 for such keywords, you will not get any benefit. Sometime they target too generic and most competitive keywords like blog, seo, blogging etc where they will be competing with websites like Wikipedia, Google, and About.com etc. So in both cases, they are unable to get traffic to their websites and blogs. So the ideal situation will be targeting keywords with lesser competition and some searches on daily basis. So for this purpose, I would suggest spending some time doing keyword research for your website using Keyword research tools available here.

Some mixed issues

Here are some more seo mistakes, you might make while working on your website:

  • Lots of people use iframes and java scripts to show some content on their websites, which is not read by search engines, so avoid using them.
  • Avoid using hidden text on your website. If you are currently doing it, remove all hidden text from your website.
  • Lots of webmasters dont use heading, strong, bold etc tag on their websites, would recommend using them where they make sense.
  • On lots of occasions, we create content duplicacy within our website by using the same content on multiple pages. I would suggest using one content on one URL only. And if you are using the same content on multiple pages, you are creating duplicacy within your website. Its fine to use a snippet of page content on other pages on your website or external websites, with a link back to that page.

These were the 10 SEO mistakes or sins, which came to my mind, most bloggers and webmasters exercises while working on their blogs and websites. Are you making any of these seo mistakes on your website, share in the comments section below? Also share if I missed any other common seo sins.

Automated traders eye social media sentiment

The Wall Street Journal writes about how hedge funds and proprietary traders are working to automate trading based on social media information and sentiment.

Some traders use message boards, StockTwits and Google Insights to get a handle on the buzz for stocks they are trading, says the report. Meanwhile, StreamBase Systems Inc. provides tools to trade on information in Twitter posts.

And starting Tuesday, Alacra Inc. will launch PulsePro, a technology suite that several investment funds have been testing for sentiment-based automated trading.

Writes the Journal:

Through backtesting, Alacra has found the ratings generated by its product can lead movements in stock prices by about one to three weeks for large-capitalization stocks. In turn, hedge funds and proprietary traders are interested in the feed despite that it won’t work anywhere near the lightning-fast speeds they’ve been achieving for much of their other computer-based trading.

“This is part of a larger trend to utilize unstructured content as an input for various types of trading signals,” said Paul Rowady, senior analyst at Tabb Group, a financial-markets research firm. He said while the trend began primarily with content from news organizations, social media represent “a natural extension of the trend.”

Of course, the issue of noise and information integrity features prominently in the story. The article quotes Ben Cathers, social media manager at Lightspeed Financial saying: “A lot of these blogs are one-person editorial teams. They don’t have the benefits of a 500-person news team fact-checking everything they say, and yet they have this incredible influence on a company’s direction.”

Its all interesting stuff. And I think its only going to become more interesting in time.

Think about automated trading based on real-time XBRL filings, or — even more interesting to me trading based on real-time activity data sold by social media vendors. Or how about including in fundamental analysis things like Twitter followers, Facebook fans and page views.

All of this online activity becomes highly relevant data.

Green Energy Tax Breaks

Tax season is officially over, right? Well, not really. Even though the April 15 tax deadline has passed, you can start planning your taxes for next year right now. One way to do that is by taking advantage of tax breaks and tax credits, such as the variety of green energy tax breaks that are available.

Note: If you missed the April 15 tax deadline you can still file a federal tax extension. With an extension, your tax filing deadline with an extension is October 15th.

Green energy tax breaks and credits

Green energy tax breaks not only save you money on daily expenses, but they also save you money on your taxes. For the 2009 and 2010 tax years, you can receive up to a 30 percent tax credit for the first $5,000 spent on upgrades and improvements to your home’s energy efficiency. Some eligible upgrades include new windows, doors, air conditioners and furnaces, insulation, solar energy, and more.

Combine these federal tax credits with available state tax credits, manufacturer’s rebates and rebates and discounts from appliance centers and home improvement centers and you’ll save even more on your purchases. You can’t go wrong with green tax breaks – in fact, many of them will pay for themselves over time.

Tax savings for new windows. Whether sealing out winters icy blast, or sealing in your air conditioning, you’ll be saving smartly with these upgrades. Resealing windows can lower your monthly utility bill significantly, as well as helping you on the road to greater energy savings. The tax credits offering savings for such actions help to significantly reduce the excessive cost of energy, saving you hard earned money.

Tax credits for appliances. This program was also known as the “cash for appliances” program, which was similar to the “Cash for Clunkers” program. The main difference was that you did not have to turn in an old appliance to receive the tax benefit; simply buy a new, energy efficient appliance. Tax credit savings can also include up to $50 on a refrigerator and other rebates on different appliances. See a list of available state tax credits.

$50 may not sound like a lot of money, but savings add up quickly. Earning a 30 percent credit (thats $1,500) on the first $5,000 you spend in making your home more energy efficient can help add up the savings really fast.

Up to a $500 rebate for central air conditioning. Receiving a tax credit up to $500 is a great savings, especially if you are replacing an inefficient system. Add that to a factory rebate offer or store discount and you may well double your saving before you ever spend a dime. Purchases like these are great for earning the green energy tax break savings and offer consumers the incentive to continue making his home more energy efficient.

Solar hot water system tax credits. If you live in a warm climate, you may well consider a solar hot water system. Solar hot water systems are definitely a green energy system. These systems cost upwards from $6,000 to $10,000, depending on the type of system you’re installing, but with a 30 percent tax credit, you’ll quickly see the savings advantages of such a purchase. This is a quick payback investment, especially if you’re going to be replacing your electric hot water system anyway. This particular tax credit is available through 2016 and can be claimed against the alternative minimum tax (AMT), an added tax that some folks in higher income brackets have to pay above their regular income tax.

Solar energy tax credits. Another great value for a green energy tax break is a solar energy system. Again with a 30 percent tax credit, a $60,000 system will shave $18,000 off your taxes. An added advantage is that you can carry forward any unused credits to your future tax years. This credit is also available through 2016 and can also be used to offset the AMT.

Public transportation tax credits. If you live in a city with a bus system, taking the bus is another green energy tax break. If your employer offers it, you can set aside up to $230 per month for public transportation costs on a pre-tax basis. When you consider the fuel for your vehicle, the maintenance costs, parking and wear and tear on your vehicle in stop and go traffic, taking the bus or alternate transportation makes more sense in many ways.

Other green energy tax credits. Other tax credits may be available for geothermal heating, commuting via bicycle, hybrid car tax credits, wind energy, and more.

Save your money before you even spend it by taking advantage of these great green energy tax breaks. Whether its home improvements, or transportation to and from work, its well worth the effortfor you, and the environment.
